Our Story

SAANEKI, derived from an Assamese word meaning "the graph knitting patterns," aims to address the challenges faced by artisans and preserve heritage crafts. Limited market access, lack of education, low capital, poor exposure, and an inadequate institutional framework often result in the financial viability of artisanal products being undermined. Our research indicates that artisans do not want their children to continue the trade due to unfavorable living conditions, leading many heritage crafts to the brink of extinction. The decline of Indian handicrafts is further exacerbated by a lack of patronage and the growing demand for imported machine-made goods.

To combat this situation, EnXarth Private Limited has established the online platform SAANEKI. As a registered startup, EnXarth focuses on providing technical and vocational training, workshops, and short courses in the earth, energy, and environment sectors. Incubated with Runway UPES in Dehradun, India, EnXarth aims to showcase the valuable resources and talent of rural India through SAANEKI.

The SAANEKI e-commerce platform serves as a gateway to promote rural technologies and highlight the craftsmanship of artisans from across India on a global scale. EnXarth identifies rural talent, provides training and upskilling opportunities, and empowers artisans to create innovative products with high market value. By directly working with rural artisans, SAANEKI aims to improve their livelihoods and ensure the preservation and recognition of their crafts.

Sustainability

From nature to our manufacturing and packaging.

There are many varieties of silkworms, but only one makes silk that is mass-producible: Bombyx mori. Because of that unique characteristic, B. Mori has a very long history of domestication by humans. Most scientists in the field suggest that the relationship began approximately 5000 years ago, Muga silk is a variety of wild silk geographically to the state of Assam in India. The silk is known for its extreme durability and has a natural yellowish-golden tint with a shimmering, glossy texture. It was previously reserved for the use of royalty. In the Brahmaputra Valley, the larvae of the Assam silkmoth feed on aromatic Som (Machilus bombycina) and Sualu (Litsea polyantha) leaves. Muga silk can be dyed after bleaching. This silk can be hand-washed with its lustre increasing after every wash. Muga silk, like other Assam silks, is used in products like sarismakhalas, and chadors.

Eri silk is the product of the domesticated silkworm Samia ricini, found mainly in North East India and some parts of China and Japan. It was imported to Thailand in 1974. The name "eri" is derived from the Assamese word "era", which means "castor", as the silkworm feeds on castor plants. Another type of eri silk is "Ailanthus silk moth", which refers to the host plant, Borkesseu, Ailanthus excelsa, practiced in China. Eri silk is also known as endi or errandi in India.
